So for me, the calculus was whether or not it made sense to pay a fairly large subscription fee for a dated piece of software that's become a pain to work with others in, or get a widely popular alternative that works better in many respects, based on open standards, with a large and helpful support community, for free.

Just by virtue of being free and open source software makes it more likely that Blender will keep up with interchange formats and interoperability, plus the huge user base obviates the need for formal technical support, at least on an individual basis. But in my freelance work I rarely found other people that used Max-they'd be converting or importing from any number of tools anyway. In a corporate setting, sharing work between people and getting proper customer support, Max makes sense. For the kind of work I've been doing, Blender is every bit as capable, if not more. I first started using Max as part of a small team over 10 years ago, and continued using it as a freelancer for years. I've made this switch, too, not too long ago. I'd love to hear counters to my opinion since I do still love the software and hope it doesn't die out.

I hope it's the right call for the future in a professional sense. The industry is shifting and I'm abandoning the Autodesk ship. I finalized my decision earlier this week when I saw a job listing for ILM that wanted Blender experience. Architecture stills seems strong for Max for now, though.īlender has been making such incredible leaps in innovation and functionality over the last 2 years that it's kind of mind blowing. Vfx market has generally been taken over by Houdini, with only the Tyflow plugin keeping it in the game. I don't see Autodesk sinking the resources required to outpace Blender (or a number of softwares) at this point, so they're just going to continue to fall further and further behind until industries stop using Max as a whole. Watching each yearly Max release only add minimal updates makes it seem as though Autodesk has Max on "autopilot" as a cash cow and aren't concerned with innovation.or even concerned with keeping up with the rest of the industry. It used to have some of the best modeling tools in the business, unrivaled plug-ins for vfx work, and great workflows in general. This is written from the perspective of a professional in the industry. Take it with a grain of salt if you disagree.
